The official currency in Hungary is Hungarian Forints (Ft, HUF) 100 EUR is about 31000 HUF. You can retrieve local currency from ATM's and exchange money in exchange offices. They will, however, be closed on Sunday and Monday.

You can exchange money at the airport (probably also on the holidays, but at a worse exchange rate than in the exchange offices in the city): http://www.bud.hu/english/passengers/shopping_and_gastronomy/services/currency_exchange.
You'll need local currency to buy your tickets to get into the city, but we advise you to change only as much as you need for travel. You can exchange more later in the city.

Euro notes are accepted in many bigger shops, however, the exchange rate is not very good.
